Let’s take it from the beginning. Mayo Beach Park is located on Edgewater, Maryland, just near of Annapolis and Baltimore. The park’s waterfront location allows for great views of the South River and the Chesapeake Bay. You can also see the Thomas Point Lighthouse from here.

This park isn’t like other busy beaches. It’s a peaceful spot at the mouth of the South River. When you step onto the sandy shores, you’ll hear gentle waves and feel the salty breeze.

Mayo Beach Park has over 1,200 feet of sandy shoreline. It’s suitable for family fun activities like swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying a picnic. The park also has a fishing pier, boat ramp, and kayak launch. Boaters and kayakers love it. There’s a playground, hiking trails, and spots to watch wildlife. Kids really enjoy it here. If you want to relax or have an interesting time, this place has something for everyone.

My Outdoor Experience for You 

In my outdoor experience, As my habit, I prefer to stay dry. I originally went to the park to relax by the water. I stopped at a nice place and enjoyed the beautiful view. Even though I didn’t get to kayak as planned, I still had a smile on my face.

I loved watching the kids run around and have fun. Near the entrance building is a great playground with slides, swings, and monkey bars—a dream for kids! If you bring your kids, let them enjoy it, but the water below is the real attraction.

There was also an event for the little ones, which added even more excitement to the day. Past the playground, a stairway leads down a steep hill to a shaded area with picnic tables on the grass. A few steps further you are on the sandy shore, ready to dip your toes into the water.

I was impressed with how well-managed the park was! The restrooms were clean with two small showers and an outdoor wash area. The parking area was also not far away.

For easy access from the parking lot with coolers or strollers, there is a paved ramp between the shower room and a large building. Just before the ramp, you will find the bathroom in a separate building.

There are plenty of picnic tables and grassy areas to relax, all with beautiful views of the water. And the best part? It’s never crowded!

The park manages crowds through a reservation system, so you can rest easy knowing it won’t be packed when you visit. You can reserve free passes online ahead of time.

Mayo Beach Park also has other general rules, such as no alcohol, no pets, and no glass or smoking on the beach. While BBQs are fun, they are kept away from sand to maintain cleanliness and safety for everyone – a trash-free policy that’s pretty impressive.

All of this made me curious about the park’s origins, which turned out to be just as interesting.

Unveiling History

Mayo Beach Park has a rich history that still continues to influence it today. It is named after Commodore Isaac Mayo, a distinguished US Navy officer born in Anne Arundel County. They named the entire area between South River and Rhode River after him!

Commodore Isaac Mayo was truly a hero. He served in wars like the War of 1812, married, had a daughter, and in 1856, he bought 39 acres of Mayo Beach for his grand home, the Gresham Estate. Today, the house has been restored and is listed as a historic site.

In the 1930s, Charles and Mary Trabing opened Mayo Beach for families to enjoy swimming, food, games, and even slot machines! By the 1950s, Mayo Beach and Beverly Triton Beach had become very popular, attracting many visitors. Later houses were built around this beach.

Anne Arundel County acquired Mayo Beach Park in the 1970s to preserve it as open space for recreation. Since then, it has developed into a beautiful park that offers a variety of activities for people of all ages.

Today, Mayo Beach Park benefits from ongoing conservation efforts, making it a welcoming place for all visitors.

This is a trash-free park, so you will need to bring bags for your trash as there are no trash cans To keep the area smoke-free, cooking is not allowed and it is recommended to bring food from home, but not in glass jars. There are also other rules to follow.

The park is dedicated to preserving its natural beauty and protecting its delicate ecosystem. The beaches are meticulously cared for to ensure they remain beautiful for future generations, and visitors play an important role in this effort.

Nature’s playground

At Mayo Beach Park, nature trails reveal a variety of wildlife. While walking this trail, keep an eye out for deer, otters, weasels, rabbits, and raccoons—they all call this place home!

One of the highlights is getting up close with Ospreys, those majestic birds. They have nesting boxes at the breakwater, but beware—these birds are highly protective of their nests! If you get too close, they will let you know loud and clear that you are in their territory.

I also learned about the Canadian geese that cause a bit of a mess, especially on the south end of the beach. They leave behind a lot of goose poop, so watch your step.

As this is a managed access park, you will need a park pass to enter. Pack accordingly—there are no grills or trash cans, so bring prepared food and carry your trash.

• Wear water shoes for rocky sand areas.
