About Howth

Howth is one of Dublin’s oldest ports, the area was a fishing village before the 14th century. Howth Castle has stood on its grounds for over 750 years. The harbor took its present form in the 19th century, and later in the 20th century, resorts were added. Despite these changes, it remains a busy fishing center and is considered one of Ireland’s “Tier 2” fishing ports.

Travelers are drawn to Howth for its beautiful landscape and rich history. During the summer, people from County Dublin and beyond flock to experience its unique attractions. Whether you enjoy cycling, jogging or walking, Howth offers stunning scenery and is conveniently close to Dublin city.

Things to do in Howth

Here I will give you a quick overview of our favorite attractions. Downstairs, you’ll find the Howth Cliff Walk and the town’s many beaches to Bailey Lighthouse and more

  1. The Howth Cliff Walk :

The Howth Cliff Walk is a top attraction here. It offers stunning coastal views and easy-to-follow trails. Despite its name, Howth has a number of walking trails that offer beautiful views of Lambe Island, Ireland’s Eye, Dublin Bay and Bailey Lighthouse.

The easiest route takes around 1.5 hours and starts at Howth Summit Car Park. It heads north to Howth Head Peak, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of Ireland’s Eye and Lambay Island.

  1. Running along the port

For a more relaxed experience, you can explore Howth Village at your own pace. It is recognized as one of the most beautiful cities in Dublin for a good reason! On a sunny day, there’s just nothing better than a lazy walk while eating Gino’s ice cream and looking at the scenery.

If you’re in the lookout for a classic coastal meal, there are a few fish and chip shops nearby. And when you’re ready to take relax, you’ll find here a lot of pubs, where you can just lie back and can enjoy a drink.

  1. Beaches abound

If you’ve read our Howth beach guide, you’ll know that there are four main beaches: Clermont Beach, Balscadden Bay Beach, Red Rock and a ‘hidden’ beach. The hidden beach is best seen from the top of the cliff walk. But as we mention in our guide to Howth’s best beaches we advise against walking on it.

While Clermont and Balscadden Bay are easy to reach, you need to go off the beaten path to reach Red Rock.

  1. Howth Castle

Howth Castle is located just south of Howth village. The St. Lawrence family has been living here since 1177, and it is one of the oldest private houses in Europe. It is true, you can’t go inside the house, but don’t be disheartened, you can explore its beautiful grounds and walk around the ancient fort.

The present fort is an old structure of 14th century, and its gardens are especially stunning in early summer when collections of azaleas and rhododendrons bloom.

Update: Howth Castle has recently been sold to an investment firm and they plan to turn it into another castle hotel in Dublin.

  1. Bailey Lighthouse

There you’ll find a lighthouse at the south-east end of Howth from the mid-17th century, but the current structure was built from 1814. One of the most notable was in 1853 when a paddle steamer struck the mountain, resulting in the loss of 83 lives.

Today, Bailey Lighthouse is a prominent stop on the Howth Cliff Walk, where you can look at it from afar.

  1. The Hurdy Gurdy Vintage Radio Museum

Putting aside the funny name for a moment, because this museum is definitely quite serious and unique to Dublin. The building known as The Martello Tower played an important role in Ireland’s early communications network. The first communication cable from Holyhead in Wales to Ireland was laid there in 1852.

Inside, you’ll discover Pat Herbert’s extensive collection of early Morse equipment, gramophones, crystal sets and valve radios. You will also find vintage looking photographs, telegrams, batteries, TVs, stamps, household items and more.
