Cork is a vibrant city on the banks of the River Lee. It played an important role in the rebel movement during the fight for Irish independence. There is so much to see and do in Cork City.

Visit several churches and cathedrals such as St. Anne’s in Shandon. This 18th century church is a famous landmark. Its watch was known as the “four-faced liar” because, until 1986, each face showed a different time. You can climb the tower and ring the bell for a small fee. Also worth a visit is the Cathedral of St. Finn Barr.

The Cork Butter Museum is a must-see. In the 19th century, Cork was the world’s largest exporter of butter. The museum tells the story of Ireland’s main food export.

Another highlight is Cork City Gaol. Around a 20-minute walk from the city center, this restored prison houses exhibits about the life of prisoners in the 19th and 20th centuries. There is also a radio museum in the same building. You can book your tickets for Cork City Gaol in advance.

Blarney Castle and more

Best Things to Do in Cork, Ireland

Some of the best places to visit in Cork are the many castles. One of the top things to do in Cork, Ireland is to visit Blarney Castle. It is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Ireland. Every year thousands of visitors come to do one thing: kiss the Blarney Stone. Legend has it that those who kiss the stone will receive the gift of gab and will never be lost for words. The stone is at the top of the fort, 99 steps up. You sit with your back to it, lean back and kiss it upside down.

But there’s more to Blarney Castle than just stone. The grounds are stunning with a poison garden, a fern garden, two waterfalls, a playground, a fairy garden, and more. My advice is to arrive early, kiss the rock, and spend the rest of your time exploring the gardens.

Blayrock Castle in Cork City is also worth a visit. This 16th-century fort was built as a harbor fort for the city. Now, it houses an observatory and museum with educational exhibits. You can climb to the top and discover the armory on a guided tour.

The work is not yet complete, so the fort is currently closed to visitors. Keep an eye on the website to see if it’s open when you’re planning a visit to County Cork.
